Energize your HTML with
Microsoft Active Server Pages
So you have to make an online catalogue. Well, coding all that stuff in HTML
could work but the deadline is too short or you simply dont wanna lose
time. The answer to your problem could be Microsoft Active Server Pages.
See what I did in this two sample sites: MercurioNet,
a portal I've programmed, and OnlyShopping,
another directory of sites.
Here are some pros and cons of the ASP environment:
PROS:
- ASP is very well documented, a good tutorial can be found with Windows NT
Server
- ASP is a free technology, included in the (free) NT Option Pack, downloadable
from microsoft.com
- ASP is easy to use, it doesn't require any compiling, supports JavaScript
and Visual Basic
CONS:
- ASP does not work, natively, on non-microsoft platforms. There are, anyway,
some portings of this language for the Netscape and Apache servers for Windows
NT, and even for Apache under Linux. The companies who make these portings
are Halcyon Software
(producer of istant-asp, an ASP interpreter written in Java and running on
every platform) and Chili!Software, producer of Chili!ASP,
the best one in my humble opinion and which is currently under development
for a Linux version.
